It’s a Funny Business... Clowning Around
As research reveals a shortage of role models for women entrepreneurs, an unusual new business was launched in Dundee today, proving that women in the city have the entrepreneurial drive to transform ideas into business opportunities. The new business, "Clowning Around with Splash" - a children's entertainment and party plan service - was launched at an inaugural performance hosted by the Business Shop Dundee where Splash the Clown was critically reviewed by a specially convened Children's Review Panel consisting of seven children aged between three and eight years.
The idea for the business, by 35 year old Claire van Geett, came from a long held passion for Clowning, a strong desire to start her own business, and the search for a job with enough flexibility to accommodate the needs of her young daughter. After overcoming a serious health problem, unemployment and little income, the turning point which gave Claire the confidence to succeed came when "Clowning Around with Splash" was endorsed as a potentially viable business. Dundee City Council provided financial help and the Business Shop Dundee provided business skills training.
Linda Clark, Business Advisor for the Business Shop Dundee said: "Many women do have the business skills to succeed, but some need help to see how skills like managing a budget or being able to organise their time have a business use. In addition, many potential business ideas remain on the shelf because women in particular find it hard to believe that they could succeed.
"We want to help more women like Claire turn the spotlight on their skills and business ideas in the two day Women into Business 2000 programme which aims to help them build confidence and self belief. It also gives them the chance to share experience with others like themselves and those already in business.
"The programme is being supported by several businesswomen from the city and we are confident that their quite different experiences will help inspire and motivate the women attending to look at their business idea, and its potential, in a new light. " She added.
