Different Audiences

Successfully delivering the message or information that you have carefully crafted depends upon a detailed understanding of your audience.

A single message or piece of information may have to be expressed to a range of different groups of people such as staff, customers, financiers, suppliers, government etc.

Each group will have different needs and expectations and the message of information may have to be presented accordingly to help it reach its target.

Some may be positively disposed to the messenger and the news while others may not. Successful communication strategies anticipate the hopes and sensitivities of your audience so that you can steer them towards the desired course of action.

For example.
A restaurant owner wants to extend his opening hours to encourage new business linked to the spring season of the local theatre. He will need to tell different groups of people how the change will benefit them and provide reassurance that any disruption will be kept to a minimum.

His message of the extended opening hours could be expressed as:

More earnings for staff

More flexibility flexibility allowing customers to eat after the theatre performance

Minimum disruption for neighbouring residents (as the late suppers would only apply on the second and third weekends of the spring season).
